It is in fact great to have good and fresh views in our desktops when we open it. I found some nice gardening wallpapers online at fine gardening, a collection of plants and herbs even lovely photos of flowers for the eyes to feast upon. I am using one now, it is a magnolia flower.

Do you know why the lovely carpels of Magnolia flowers are tough? It is their defense mechanism, to avoid damage by eating and crawling beetles. This flowering tree genus is named after French botanist Pierre Magnol. Magnolias are used as Chinese medicine for 5,000 years to fight cancer, heart disease and dementia? The bark, which is aromatic, contains magnolol and honokiol, two polyphenolic compounds that have…

It is so nice to make our own garden, flowers, vegetables and herbs. Herbs are ideal to be grown in small containers and near the kitchen for ease of access. We can even put the containers on the window sill for decorative purposes also. We have been planning about nicer garden, and efficient one making maximum use of space. Hydroponics and square foot gardening when the greenhouse will be built. It is very nice to use small containers for this kind of gardening, it is a challenge to see how artistic and resourceful we can be. And it pays in the with free plants, veggies and flowers in our reach. Here is a very nice video I found today about…

Fat hen or henbane? These are both plants; fat hen is perfectly edible, “You can use the leaves in salads like spinach, make tea and eat the roots,” said Mr Worrall Thompson; while “henbane is a very toxic plant and should never be eaten”, an urgent warning issued by Healthy & Organic Living magazine’s website.

Henbane – Hyoscyamus niger – has sticky serrated leaves, yellow, funnel-shaped flowers and a stale scent.

The weed’s name has Anglo-Saxon origins – meaning killer of hens – and it can cause drowsiness, hallucinations and disorientation in humans. Larger quantities can cause a loss of consciousness, seizures, trembling of the limbs and, in extreme cases, death. “Henbane is associated with lots of mythical tales – it’s said…

Jimson Weed is the toxic weed that caused the illness (nauseous and dizzy, and in some cases suffered hallucinations) of six people after it has been cooked into an Indian potato stew few weeks ago in Gaithersburg. Jimson Weed is a type of plant that flourishes in sunny areas that can easily crop up in a home garden and can be mistaken for a cooking ingredient. All parts of the plant are highly toxic especially the seeds. Plants are the best medicine, but it can also be a poison if not used correctly.

I have given you every herb bearing seed… to you it shall be for meat

This is one of the first blooms of our sunflower in the field, the first batch.

Sow seeds in spring and away from potatoes so growth will not be…

This is one of my friend’s very healthy backyard garden. It is such her joy and pride and the food we cooked that day straight from her garden was just so tasty and delicious, a homegrown flavor. If you look closely, she is behind one of the plants.

The first garden

The very first garden, that of Eden, was the real paradise in abundance and perfection, and I was wishing mine will be blessed with healthy plants. In this part of the country, Louisiana, it is so hot in the summer so I planted my crops in the place where they get sufficient shade and not be baked by the hot sun, for you know these days, the heat is different from years back, some call them global warming, which is true anywhere. My garden spot is far from the back of our house near the woods down the hill. Gardening is really a good hobby or activity, and in my setting, a good exercise for my legs climbing up and…

Somebody awaken me from my nap. When I opened the door, this is what awaited me:

Seeds worth more than a year’s supply for our garden. According to the National Gardening Bureau slogan that “great gardeners use seed”. Why seeds? Well, it is like raising a living thing right from the start and witness it develop it’s life and beauty. It is also cheaper than those vegetables and herbs that are ready to plant.
